Find answers to common questions about our Russian Blue kittens and adoption process

Browse by Category

What is the adoption process?

+

Our adoption process is simple and transparent: First, browse our available kittens on our website. Once you find a kitten you're interested in, submit an inquiry through our contact form or give us a call. We'll discuss your lifestyle, preferences, and answer any questions you have. If you decide to move forward, a deposit secures your reservation. We'll keep you updated with photos, videos, and progress reports until your kitten is ready to come home at 12-14 weeks of age.

At what age can I take my kitten home?

+

Kittens are ready to go to their new homes between 12-14 weeks of age. This is longer than some breeders, but we believe it's essential for proper development. By this age, kittens are fully weaned, litter trained, have received their initial vaccinations, are well-socialized with people and other pets, and have developed strong immune systems and confident personalities.

Can I visit the cattery before adopting?

+

Yes! We welcome and encourage visits by appointment. This allows you to meet our kittens, see how they're raised in our family home, meet the parents, observe our clean and caring environment, and ask any questions in person. We're located in Galveston, Texas, and are happy to schedule a visit that works for your schedule. Contact us to arrange a time!

Do you offer shipping or delivery?

+

Yes, we can arrange safe and comfortable delivery within the United States. We work with experienced, USDA-licensed pet transporters who specialize in kitten delivery. Your kitten will travel in a climate-controlled cabin with proper ventilation, food, and water. We also offer local pickup in Galveston, which we encourage when possible. Delivery fees vary based on distance - contact us for a quote to your location.

What is included with each kitten?

+

Each kitten comes with a comprehensive package: Complete health certificate from our licensed veterinarian, up-to-date vaccination records, deworming records, written health guarantee, TICA registration papers (if applicable), starter kit with food samples (the food they're currently eating), favorite toys, blanket with familiar scents from home, care guide and feeding instructions, and lifetime breeder support. We want to ensure a smooth transition to your home!

Can I reserve a kitten before it's born?

+

Yes! We maintain a waiting list for upcoming litters. If you'd like to reserve a kitten from a future litter, we can add you to our list. You'll have first choice when kittens are born. We'll keep you updated throughout the pregnancy and send photos and videos as the kittens grow. A deposit is required to secure your spot on the waiting list.

What makes Russian Blue cats special?

+

Russian Blues are truly unique! They're known for their stunning silver-blue double coat that shimmers in the light, mesmerizing emerald green eyes that develop as they mature, gentle and affectionate temperament, high intelligence and trainability, quiet voice (they're not overly vocal), loyalty to their family while being somewhat reserved with strangers, and lower allergen production compared to many other breeds. They form deep bonds with their families and are wonderful companions!

Are Russian Blue cats hypoallergenic?

+

While no cat is 100% hypoallergenic, Russian Blues are considered one of the best breeds for allergy sufferers. They produce significantly less Fel d 1 protein (the primary allergen in cat saliva and skin) compared to other breeds. Their dense double coat also traps more dander close to the skin. Many people with mild to moderate cat allergies find they can tolerate Russian Blues well. However, we always recommend spending time with the breed before committing if you have allergies.

What is the temperament of Russian Blue cats?

+

Russian Blues have wonderful, balanced personalities! They're affectionate and loving with their families, intelligent and easily trained, playful but not hyperactive, gentle and good with children, somewhat reserved with strangers (not unfriendly, just cautious), loyal and form strong bonds, quiet and soft-voiced, and sensitive to their owner's moods. They enjoy interactive play, following their favorite people around the house, and having a routine. They're perfect for families, singles, and seniors alike!

Do Russian Blues get along with children and other pets?

+

Yes! Russian Blues are excellent family cats. They're gentle and patient with children, especially when the children are taught to handle them respectfully. Our kittens are raised with our own children, so they're well-socialized from birth. They also typically get along well with other cats and even cat-friendly dogs, especially when introduced properly. Their calm, adaptable nature makes them great companions in multi-pet households.

How big do Russian Blue cats get?

+

Russian Blues are medium-sized cats with an elegant, muscular build. Males typically weigh 10-12 pounds, while females usually weigh 7-10 pounds. They reach their full size around 2-3 years of age. Despite their moderate size, they appear larger due to their plush double coat. They have a graceful, athletic build with long legs and a fine-boned structure.

What is the lifespan of a Russian Blue cat?

+

Russian Blues are known for their longevity and robust health. With proper care, nutrition, and regular veterinary checkups, they typically live 15-20 years, with some living even longer! They're generally a very healthy breed with few genetic health issues. We focus on breeding healthy cats from strong bloodlines to give your kitten the best start in life.

Do Russian Blue cats shed a lot?

+

Russian Blues have a dense double coat, but they shed less than many other breeds. They experience seasonal shedding (typically in spring and fall), but regular brushing 2-3 times per week helps minimize loose hair around your home. Their coat doesn't mat easily, making grooming relatively simple. Many owners are pleasantly surprised by how manageable their shedding is compared to other cats.

What is your health guarantee?

+

We provide a comprehensive 1-year health guarantee covering genetic and congenital health issues. This includes coverage for conditions like HCM (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy), PKD (polycystic kidney disease), and other hereditary conditions. All kittens are thoroughly vet-checked before going home and come with complete health records. If any covered condition is diagnosed within the guarantee period, we'll work with you to find a solution. Your kitten's health and your peace of mind are our top priorities!

What vaccinations do kittens receive before going home?

+

By 12-14 weeks, our kittens have received their age-appropriate vaccinations including FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia) - typically 2 rounds by the time they go home. They've also been dewormed multiple times and treated for parasites as needed. We provide complete vaccination records and a schedule for future vaccinations. Your veterinarian can continue the vaccination protocol from there.

Are your breeding cats health tested?

+

Absolutely! All of our breeding cats undergo comprehensive health testing before being included in our breeding program. This includes HCM screening (echocardiogram by a veterinary cardiologist), PKD testing, FeLV/FIV testing, and regular veterinary examinations. We only breed cats with excellent health, temperament, and conformation to breed standards. This commitment to health testing helps ensure we're producing the healthiest kittens possible.

What should I feed my Russian Blue kitten?

+

We feed our kittens high-quality, protein-rich kitten food and will send you home with a supply of what they're currently eating. Russian Blues do well on premium grain-free or limited-ingredient diets. We recommend continuing the same food for at least 2 weeks after bringing your kitten home to avoid digestive upset, then gradually transitioning if you choose to switch brands. We'll provide detailed feeding instructions and are always available to answer nutrition questions!

Do you provide ongoing support after adoption?

+

Yes! We provide lifetime breeder support - you can contact us anytime with questions about care, behavior, health, nutrition, or any concerns about your Russian Blue. We love getting updates and staying connected with our kitten families! Many of our adopters become lifelong friends. We're here for you and your cat throughout their entire life. Think of us as your Russian Blue resource for life!

Are Russian Blue cats prone to any health issues?

+

Russian Blues are generally one of the healthiest cat breeds with few breed-specific health issues. Like all cats, they can potentially develop HCM (heart disease), but it's less common in Russian Blues than in some other breeds. They may also be prone to obesity if overfed, so maintaining a healthy weight is important. With proper care, regular vet checkups, and good genetics (which we prioritize in our breeding program), Russian Blues typically enjoy long, healthy lives.

How much does a Russian Blue kitten cost?

+

Our Russian Blue kittens are priced based on several factors including quality, pedigree, color intensity, eye color, and whether they're pet or show quality. Pet quality kittens (with limited registration) are more affordable, while show quality kittens with breeding rights are priced higher. Prices typically range from $1,200 to $2,500. Please contact us directly for current pricing and availability, as prices may vary by litter and individual kitten characteristics.

What payment methods do you accept?

+

We accept several payment methods for your convenience: Cash (for local pickups), Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, and bank wire transfers. The deposit can be paid via any of these methods, and the remaining balance is due before or at pickup/delivery. We'll provide detailed payment instructions once you've reserved a kitten. All payments are secure and we provide receipts for your records.

How much is the deposit and is it refundable?

+

We require a $300-$500 deposit (depending on the kitten) to reserve your kitten. This deposit secures your kitten and is applied toward the total price. Deposits are non-refundable as they take the kitten off the market and we turn away other potential buyers. However, if something happens to the kitten before pickup (which is extremely rare), your deposit can be transferred to another available kitten or refunded. We want to work with serious buyers who are committed to providing a loving home.

Why are Russian Blue kittens more expensive than shelter cats?

+

Great question! Responsible breeding involves significant investment: Health testing for breeding cats (HCM scans, genetic testing, etc.), premium nutrition for mothers and kittens, multiple veterinary visits and vaccinations, TICA registration and pedigree documentation, high-quality supplies and enrichment, time and dedication to socialization, health guarantee and lifetime support, and maintaining a clean, safe breeding environment. We're not a kitten mill - we're a small family cattery focused on quality, health, and temperament. Every kitten receives individual attention and the best possible start in life!

How long have you been breeding Russian Blues?

+

We've been breeding Russian Blues for over 10 years! What started as a passion for this beautiful breed has grown into a family tradition. Vani and Peterson, along with our three children (two boys and a girl), are all involved in raising and socializing our kittens. Our experience and dedication mean we understand the breed inside and out, and we're committed to producing healthy, well-adjusted kittens that make wonderful family companions.

Where are you located and do you serve my area?

+

We're located in beautiful Galveston, Texas, on the Gulf Coast. We serve families throughout Texas including Houston (just 45 minutes away), Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, and beyond. We also work with families across the United States through our delivery service. Many families from Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and other nearby states have adopted from us. Whether you're local or out of state, we'll work with you to make the adoption process smooth and convenient!

How are your kittens raised and socialized?

+

Our kittens are raised right in our family home, not in cages or a separate cattery building. From birth, they're handled daily by Vani, Peterson, and our three children. They're exposed to normal household sounds (vacuum, TV, dishwasher), different people, and typical family activities. This early socialization ensures they grow up confident, friendly, and well-adjusted. By the time they go home, they're comfortable with being held, playing with toys, using the litter box, and interacting with people of all ages. They're truly family-raised kittens!

When do Russian Blue kittens' eyes turn green?

+

All kittens are born with blue eyes! Russian Blue kittens begin developing their signature emerald green eyes around 4 months of age. The color change is gradual - you'll first notice a yellow-green ring around the pupil, which slowly spreads outward. By 8-12 months, their eyes should be fully green, though the color continues to deepen and intensify up to 2 years of age. The final eye color can range from bright green to deep emerald, and it's truly stunning!

What questions should I ask a Russian Blue breeder?

+

Great question! When looking for a reputable breeder, ask about: Health testing of parent cats (HCM, PKD, FeLV/FIV), health guarantee terms and coverage, socialization practices and where kittens are raised, what's included with the kitten (vet records, registration, supplies), references from previous buyers, whether you can visit the cattery, the breeder's experience with the breed, and what support they provide after adoption. A good breeder will welcome these questions and be transparent about their practices. We're always happy to answer any questions you have!
